How does your fireplace look and is it expensive? I have a fireplace with old stone on it, and want to take that off and build a floor to ceiling fireplace, maybe using tiles (ceramic). What is the difference between a gas log fireplace and a wood burning fireplace? I am looking at homes to buy and I want a fireplace. I am not familiar with a gas log fireplace but fairly familiar with a wood burning fireplace. What is the difference between the two different fireplaces? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages between the two? I don't have tons of money to pay on gas logs. Are they expensive? How do they work? Thanks in advance for anything you can share with me about fireplaces and helping me make a very important and potentially costly decision.
What is the Average Cost of Building a Fireplace? I am buying a house that doesn't have a fireplace. In the future I would like to install one. I am currently figuring up my 5 year plan for the property and want to know about how much the addition of a wood burning masonry fireplace costs. I am aware that this is not the most efficient fireplace available, but this is what I am going to choose based strictly on my preference. I have searched the internet and have found many articles debating different types of fireplaces, estimated resale value, etc. but nothing with a ball park dollar amount. If anybody has added a fireplace to their house or is a contractor who has worked on similar jobs, I would greatly appreciate an approximate figure. Thanks! Once again. I am aware that this might not be the most efficent or cost saving. The question is not what kind to build, but how much $$ am I looking at. This is what I am going to build. I just need dollar amounts.
Any suggestions how to start my fireplace that is neither gas or electric? We just bought a house and the fireplace is neither gas or electric. Do I just put wood in the fireplace and open the damper. This is the first house I ever owned with a fireplace. We live in Southern California and it only gets cold in the winter. But I just want to prepare myself. Don't want to burn the house down or smoke the house if you get my drift. Any suggestions how to start my fireplace that is neither gas or electric?

Nate, lol....I know it sounds like a stupid question, obviously I know it was made to put out heat and not for show, I was wondering how much heat it would put out, enough to heat the entire room and surrounding area or just immediate area

How to change the facade of a wood burning fireplace? Unfortunately, I have a wood burning fireplace in my living room instead of a traditional fireplace. I like the look of the fireplace itself, but there is stone all on the wall behind it which limits what I can do color wise with the room. (I prefer color - not beige, which is all I can really use) There is also the stone encircling the fireplace on the floor. Why does my gas fireplace make a "drumroll rattle" sound periodically when it is not running? We have lived in the house six weeks or so, it was built in '94. This is a gas insert in a real fireplace (we have a chimney)...the pilot light is always on. It very irregularly (like once a week or less) does this weird thing where it starts to make a drumroll or machine gun noise for about two seconds then stops. It continues to do this at irregular intervals until we turn the fireplace on and run it a while. Then it stops again for a week or more before it starts again....what gives? Is there air in the line or something? I am going to call the gas company but wondered if anyone heard of this happening before. It drives my dog crazy. She thinks there's some critter in there! Nope, it is not windy. Nope, it's not a woodpecker. It's very loud and coming from the pipe area.

Why does my fireplace burn wood so quickly? It's a HomeFire product same as a jetmaster? I have a built in open fireplace and recently it's begun to burn through the wood so so quickly. (tested different log types) . It can burn through a log basket 60cm x 40cm in just a couple of hours -that's about 50 or so logs. There is a lever on the right which moves the "flap" (can't think of a better word) at the opening of the chimney to wide or narrow. I tested both wide and narrow but no obvious change. It's actually burnt through sections of the fire grate. How do I find more info on how fast or slow it should burn etc etc. Aside from log types, what else may cause the fire to burn so quickly?
How tall must a stove pipe above a free-standing fireplace be before it can make a 45 degree angle? I have a "Majestic" brand free-standing fireplace I am restoring in a house built in 1950. Does anyone have any experience with this? The manufacturer says laminate flooring shouldnt' be exposed to heat over 84 degrees, which obviously the fireplace would surpass. Please give us advice or share your experience. Thanks.
