Just out of curiosity: In the 1950's why did they hard wire stoves? Mom bought me a new stove for Christmas, out of the blue. So let's just say not a lot of advanced planning went into this. So they dropped of the new stove and the delivery guys took one look at the stove and knew that it would be hard wired in. They moved it and it was. Now ignoring the fact that I am dumb, and even if there had been an outlet it would probably have been the wrong kind anyway. Is there any reason they hard wired stoves rather than using plugs?

How do I compare cooking power of gas and electric stoves? Gas stove burners are rated in BTU; electric burners in W. I can convert watts to BTU/hr, or BTU to kWh. They have different dimensions. When they tell me a burner is 10,000 BTU, I wonder - is that if it's left on for an hour? That seems to be the only way to make the units match.
